HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Fire Department responded to 628 E. Ave. C for a structure fire around 4:15 Wednesday morning.
Upon arrival, crews found a detached garage fully involved in fire. The garage was occupied at the time of the fire and the occupant was able to escape the blaze with no injuries.
Crews began defensive fire operations on the involved structure and implemented measures to protect two adjacent homes that were being affected by radiant heat. Occupants of both residences were evacuated by fire personnel and had no injuries. Fire did extend into both residences but was extinguished quickly. All fire was brought under control in approximately 30 minutes.
Six adults who were the occupants of both adjacent homes were displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross. Fire investigators on scene determined the cause of the fire was an improperly installed wood-burning stove in the detached garage.
HFD would like to remind everyone with the colder temperatures incoming that all wood-burning appliances be installed and maintained by professionals.
