LYON COUNTY — Law enforcement and fire officials are investigating a intentionally set fire at a Kansas home.

Just before 11a.m. Wednesday, crews were dispatched to a house fire at 406 State Street in Emporia,  according to a media release from the fire department.

Crews found heavy smoke and flames in the south yard of the residence and fire traveling up the side of the home. There was a high fire load in the yard.

Fire Crews utilizing 3 attack hose lines, a master stream and an elevated master stream were able to make an attack and eventually get the fire contained. The electricity and gas to the building were shut off by the utility companies.

There was no gas service to the house but due to the high heat the gas line was compromised and had to be disconnected in the alley. Several departments in the county were requested for Mutual Aid. There was heavy fire damage to the residence and light damage to the structure to the south on 4th avenue.  Two firefighters were injured. Authorities did not report the extent of their injuries or where they were treated. The occupants of the home were not injured.  One cat died, two others are presumed dead. One dog was evacuated from the home. Two others are presumed dead.

The cause of the fire is ruled as incendiary in nature starting outside of the residence.
