Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Riley Moss returned two first-half interceptions for touchdowns and No. 18 Iowa beat No. 17 Indiana 34-6 on Saturday. Iowa intercepted three of Michael Penix Jr.'s passes and had a fourth wiped out by a roughing-the-passer call. Tyler Goodson rushed for 99 yards and a touchdown for the Hawkeyes. Spencer Petras had a 9-yard touchdown run, and completed 13 of 27 passes for 145 yards. It was the seventh consecutive win for the Hawkeyes dating to last season. It was only the third loss for Indiana in its last 18 season openers.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — No. 7 Iowa State staved off upset-minded Northern Iowa 16-10 to avoid being on the receiving end of college football's biggest FCS over FBS upset since Appalachian State beat No. 5 Michigan in 2007. Northern Iowa kept the Cyclones offense off balance throughout the contest. Brock Purdy completed 21 of 26 passes for 197 yards for Iowa State. All-America running back Breece Hall, who rushed for 1,572 yards and averaged 5.6 yards per carry last season, finished with 69 yards on 23 carries with a touchdown.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Adrian Martinez ran for two touchdowns and passed for another and Nebraska broke away from Fordham in the second quarter in a 52-7 victory. Samori Toure caught eight balls for 133 yards and ran three times for 35 yards and a score as the Cornhuskers bounced back from a loss at Illinois last week. Markese Stepp added 101 yards on 18 carries and the Huskers finished with 631 total yards. Fordham linebacker Ryan Greenhagen finished with a Division I record-tying 30 tackles. That's the most since Donald Payne had the same number for Stetson against Campbell in 2014.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Kansas State sixth-year quarterback Skylar Thompson ran for two touchdowns and the Wildcats opened the season with a 24-7 win over Stanford. Deuce Vaughn sprinted 59 yards for a touchdown and finished with 124 yards rushing on 13 carries for the Wildcats, who finished last season with a five-game losing streak. Stanford's only score came on its final offensive snap, when Tanner McKee threw a 14-yard touchdowns pass to Brycen Treymayne. The Cardinal had won their last four games in 2020. K-State had lost its last five games. Thompson missed the last seven games a year ago with a shoulder injury.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Yasmani Grandal went 3 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs as the Chicago White Sox built a big lead and then held off Salvador Perez and the Kansas City Royals 10-7. Perez hit two homers, including his 40th of the season, and drove in five runs. His homer total is second in the majors — Shohei Ohtani of the Angels hit his 43rd on Saturday night. Luis Robert homered and tied a career high with four hits for the AL Central-leading White Sox, who led 9-3 in the fifth inning.

MILWAUKEE (AP) —  Adrian Houser pitched Milwaukee's first complete-game shutout since 2014, throwing a crisp three-hitter that led the Brewers over the St. Louis Cardinals 4-0. Not since Kyle Lohse blanked Cincinnati on two hits on Sept. 24, 2014, had a Milwaukee pitcher gone the distance without allowing a run. The Brewers had played 1,011 games since then, marking the longest active streak in the majors. Houser struck out seven, walked none and blanked the playoff-contending Cardinals on 100 pitches. It was his first pro shutout during a career that began in 2011 in the Houston organization. Luis Urias led off the Milwaukee first with his 19th home run, the only run that Houser and the NL Central leaders needed.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Tyler Badie ran for 185 yards and accounted for two touchdowns, and Connor Bazelak threw for 257 yards and two scores, as Missouri beat Central Michigan 34-24 on Saturday. Elijah Young also had a touchdown run for the Tigers, who didn't put the game away until late in the fourth quarter. Washington transfer Jacob Sirmon threw for 292 yards with a TD and two picks for Central Michigan. Lew Nichols III, the MAC freshman of the year, had 135 yards rushing and a score. Chippewas coach Jim McElwain missed the game after an emergency appendectomy this week.

UNDATED (AP) — Oklahoma State stopped Missouri State twice on fourth down during the last two minutes of the fourth quarter to hold on for a 23-16 victory. The Cowboys botched a kickoff return deep in their own territory after the Bears scored their first touchdown with 3:06 remaining. Missouri State, trailing by seven, had one more chance to tie the game after its late turnover on downs but failed to complete the rally. Oklahoma State backup quarterback Shane Illingworth, who replaced regular starter Spencer Sanders in the team's season opener, threw for 315 yards and completed 22-of-40 passing attempts in his third career start.

The playoff-contending A's have lost 14 of 20 after winning 12 of the previous 15.

Elsewhere in the majors:

— Gary Sánchez hit a grand slam and a two-run homer, but the New York Yankees blew a late lead and lost again to Baltimore, falling to the last-place Orioles 8-7. The wild card-contending Yankees dropped to 7-9 against the Orioles this year. Baltimore is 1-18 against AL East-leading Tampa Bay. New York wasted leads of 4-1, 5-2 and 7-4 and lost for the sixth time in eight games following its first 13-game winning streak since 1961. Sánchez hit a slam in the second inning and his home run in the sixth gave the Yankees a 7-4 lead and earned the catcher a brief curtain call. But the reception from the crowd changed when Andrew Heaney allowed four runs in the seventh.

—Ozzie Albies homered on the first pitch of Ryan Feltner's major league debut, and the Atlanta Braves added three more home runs in a 9-2 win over the Colorado Rockies. Austin Riley, Adam Duvall and Travis d'Arnaud also went deep for the Braves. Charlie Morton pitched seven strong innings, allowing two runs on two hits. He walked two and struck out three in helping the NL East-leading Braves maintain a two-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies. The Rockies scored their runs on an RBI grounder by Brendan Rodgers and a sacrifice fly by Ryan McMahon.

— Franmil Reyes homered over the Green Monster to spark a three-run third inning — Cleveland's franchise-record tying 19th straight game with a home run — and the Indians salvaged the finale of the series with an 11-5 victory over the COVID-impacted Boston Red Sox. Reyes added a two-run double and went 4 for 4, and Bradley Zimmer had a two-run single for the Indians, who matched their single-season record streak of homering in consecutive games, set in May of 2000. The Red Sox scratched scheduled starter Nick Pivetta before the game, placing him on the COVID-19-related injured list. About 30 minutes before the first pitch, they added infielder/outfielder Danny Santana to the list, giving them 11 players — six position and five pitchers — in the last 10 days.

— Five Detroit pitchers teamed up to allow Cincinnati just one run, Jeimer (JAY'-mur) Candelerio delivered a two-run triple and the Tigers took the rubber match of the three-game series 4-1. The loss dropped Cincinnati percentage points behind San Diego for the National League's second wild card. The Padres host the Astros on Sunday. All-Star closer Gregory Soto threw a wild pitch in the eighth inning that scored Cincinnati's only run, but he finished the game for his 18th save.

— Odúbel Herrera hit an RBI single in the 10th inning and the Philadelphia Phillies averted a three-game sweep, beating the Miami Marlins 4-3. Bryce Harper hit his 27th home run and Freddy Galvis also connected for the playoff-chasing Phillies. Herrera had been 0 for 4 in the game before driving in automatic runner Freddy Galvis from second.

— Brady Singer tossed seven scoreless innings and Salvador Perez hit another home run as the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 6-0. Singer (4-9) matched his season high with seven innings and allowed four hits with no walks and struck out six. It was the third time this season that Singer has issued no walks. Perez had his third home run of the series, eighth in the last 11 games and 41st of the season. He's second in the majors behind Shohei Ohtani. Dylan Cease (11-7) took the loss. He gave up four runs and four hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out nine.

Francisco Lindor and Jonathan Villar also homered for the Mets, who wasted an early four-run lead but got 4 2/3 shutout innings from their bullpen to win for the seventh time in eight games. Lane Thomas and Josh Bell homered for Washington, which has lost eight of nine and 24 and its last 31.

Yankees put Loaisiga on IL with strained rotator cuff

UNDATED (AP) — The Yankees have placed reliever Jonathan Loaisiga (loh-AY'-see-gah) on the 10-day injured list because of a strained right rotator cuff.

Manager Aaron Boone said Loaisiga experienced some pain Saturday morning after he surrendered a game-tying homer to Jorge Mateo in the seventh inning of Friday night's 4-3 victory over Baltimore. An MRI showed the strain and Loaisiga was given a cortisone injection. Boone said Loaisiga will not throw for 10 days, and he is hoping the hard-throwing right-hander can return this season.

In other MLB news:

— Twins manager Rocco Baldelli plans to leave the team to return home to Minnesota for the birth of his child. Baldelli says he will be in the dugout for the start of Minnesota's game at Tampa Bay but could depart before it ends. The schedule called for Baldelli to head to the clubhouse to prepare for his flight about three hours after the scheduled first pitch. Veteran coach Bill Evers will fill in for Baldelli, who may miss a four-game series that starts Monday night at Cleveland.

Cowboys' Martin likely to miss opener after positive test

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys are expected to open the season at Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay without right guard Zack Martin after the four-time All-Pro tested positive for COVID-19.

Martin is the latest of several Dallas starters to test positive and miss time, but the others have since returned. Coach Mike McCarthy said news of Martin's positive test came Saturday. Backup tackle Brandon Knight is also on the COVID-19 list.

Third-year pro Connor McGovern is the likely replacement for Martin as the Cowboys get set for Thursday's visit to the Bucs and seven-time champion quarterback Tom Brady.

PGA-TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Cantlay delivers another clutch moment to win FedEx Cup

ATLANTA (AP) — Patrick Cantlay has won the FedEx Cup and it's $15 million prize, and he did it style. This time, "Patty Ice" was clutch with his 6-iron.

Cantlay had a one-shot lead over Jon Rahm on the final hole of the Tour Championship. With Rahm just behind the green in light rough in two, Cantlay hit a 6-iron to 12 feet.

Rahm narrowly missed his chip-in for eagle. That left Cantlay a safe two-putt birdie for a 69 and the $15 million prize.

Rahm made $5 million as the runner-up. Cantlay is now a front-runner for player of the year.

Verstappen's like royalty as Dutch king watches home win

ZANDVOORT, Netherlands (AP) — Max Verstappen thrilled his home crowd by winning the Netherlands Grand Prix in style to reclaim the Formula One championship lead from Lewis Hamilton.

The Red Bull driver's leading seventh win of the season and 17th of his career moved him three points ahead of the defending champion, who finished second but softened the blow with a bonus point for fastest lap. Hamilton's Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas was third.

Verstappen started from pole position for a season-leading seventh time, and sixth in the past seven races, courtesy of a brilliant qualifying session. He leads Hamilton 7-4 for wins.
