HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson company is wanting to take steps to mitigate a plume of underground water pollution.

Cargill Salt on East Avenue G says it has identified a plume of chloride moving southeast from its site. Cargill is under a consent order from the KDHE to curb its movement and remove the plume.

Cargill will be before the Hutchinson City Council Tuesday asking permission to install a remediation well just north of the fishing pond in Carey Park. The water would be pumped from the well, then diluted before being discharged back into the Arkansas River as part of Cargill's current KDHE permit. The well would be a test bed for the project and, if successful, would be part of the cleanup plan. The well would operate until the plume is cleaned up.

City Attorney Paul Brown, Parks Director Justin Combs and Director of Public Works Brian Clennan all recommend approval by the council.
