The USD 308 Board of Education met in a special meeting Wednesday evening to discuss possible next steps following the failure of the district’s $109 million bond issue last November.
During the meeting, Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson presented survey results showing many community members support focusing on safety, infrastructure and maintenance projects at existing schools rather than large-scale new construction.
District officials outlined a possible reduced proposal in the $36 million to $40 million range that would prioritize roof replacements, HVAC upgrades, storm shelters, controlled entry improvements, restroom renovations and other safety-related projects throughout the district. Officials said the plan could potentially be structured as a zero mill increase for taxpayers.
Board members also spent considerable time discussing community trust, communication and public engagement. Several members said more outreach and transparency will be necessary before moving forward with another bond proposal.
No formal action was taken Wednesday night. Board members discussed possible election timelines ranging from November 2026 to March 2027 as conversations continue about the district’s long-term facility needs.
