HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Carbon Monoxide leaks are important to catch early.

"Get your furnaces checked before you start using those," said Hutchinson Fire Marshal Mike Cain. "Make sure there's nothing wrong with the flue pipes, the heat exchangers. The other problem this time of year would be the carbon monoxide leaks in the house.

Please make sure that all Carbon Monoxide detectors are operational with fresh batteries.

"Carbon Monoxide detectors, you can put wherever," Cain said. "That Carbon Monoxide mixes readily with the air. It can be at floor level, up on the ceiling with the smoke alarm. It also, it too needs to be in the hallway outside the sleeping area so everybody can hear it. That's generally when things happen, you go to sleep, you just don't wake up."

CO is a colorless, odorless gas that can significantly harm or even cause death. Symptoms are headaches, nausea and flushed skin. If your alarm sounds, get out of the house and dial 911.
