HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Monarchs defeated the Great Bend Bat Cats, 9-2 on Sunday evening at Hobart-Detter Field for their third straight win and second consecutive over the Bat Cats.
The win also goes down in the history books as the 400th win in Monarchs' program history, which started in 2009.
The Monarchs are now 3-0 since the All-Star break and have won three straight games for the first time this summer.
Hutchinson (10-11) starting pitcher Brady Beverman went seven scoreless innings on the mound, striking out six and walking none. Beverman earned the win, his first of the season.
The Monarchs scored one in each of the first three innings to lead 3-0 after three. Hutchinson added three more in the fifth on three hits, including an RBI single from Cal York and Caleb Cotton. Hutchinson scored two more in the sixth to extend its lead to 8-0 after six innings.
HutchCC product Will Edmunson, who had five RBI on Saturday night, homered to dead center in the seventh to lead 9-0 after seven.
The Bat Cats scored their lone two runs in the eighth inning off of Monarchs reliever Cole Torreau. Great Bend (17-7) had 11 hits in the game, but also struck out 11 times and stranded 10 baserunners.
Jaden Gustafson and Edmunson both led the Monarchs offense with two hits apiece. Hogan Shelby and Cal York each drove in two runs in the victory.
The Monarchs will go for the sweep on Monday night in Great Bend, when they face the Bat Cats at Al Burns Memorial Field for a 7 p.m. first pitch. The Monarchs return to Hutchinson on Wednesday to open a series against the Derby Twins at Hobart-Detter Field.
