3 Kansans dead after, pickup strikes steer, collides head-on with semi

LABETTE COUNTY —Three people died in an accident just after 11:30p.m. Friday in Labette County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup driven by Jimmy C. Bond, 81, Edna, Kansas, was eastbound on U.S. 166 six miles east of U.S. 169.

The vehicle struck a steer on the highway causing vehicle failure. The  pickup then traveled into the westbound lane. A westbound 2020 Peterbilt semi driven by Dusty R. Elbrader, 42, Garden City, Missouri, attempted to avoid the crash.  The vehicles collided head-on.

Bond and two passengers identified as 21-year-old Colton J. Bond and 79-year-old Barbara J. Bond both of Edna, Kansas, were pronounced dead at the scene.

EMS transported Elbrader to Coffeyville Regional Medical Center. The occupants of the pickup were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.
