Special question on ballot for county commission expansion

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After much discussion and promises of better representation, the voters in Reno County will decide whether to expand the Reno County Commission from three to five members.

A special question on the expansion is on Tuesday's ballot for the school board and municipal election.

Proponents of the expansion feel that the rural areas of the county will get more representation, while opponents feel it would give too much leeway for commissioners to talk about matters outside of the usual meetings.

The matter has brought mixed feelings among the public. The Hutchinson Community Foundation has been one of a few organizations to speak out about the proposal. The foundation has expressed support for change.

If approved, the commission would expand in the 2022 election.
