HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The next Adopt-A-Pet event is Saturday, June 22 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the EAGLE Media studios with the Hutchinson Animal Shelter. Michaela Schommer with the shelter said they are still overfilled with animals right now.

"It's a huge problem here locally for us, but it's a national pandemic in animal welfare right now," Schommer said. "Every shelter, every rescue, every non-profit animal welfare organization is overworked, over flooded with animals needing support and help."

Schommer said they will adopt out animals at half price on Saturday.

"If it is a puppy, normally it's $200, it's gonna be a flat $100 adoption fee," Schommer said "If it's an adult dog, they're normally $150, so that's gonna be a $75 adoption fee. Our cats at the shelter, kittens will be $50, and adults will be $25. You just come out, you meet with the pets, talk to an adoption counselor, and then we have a one-page application. It's very basic and simple. Most of our adoptions are done same day. If you have a landlord, maybe call and give them a heads up that you're looking to adopt."

The vet care put in to pets at the shelter would cost you more than the adoption fee.

"Spay and neuter surgery has been performed," Schommer said. "They've been microchipped. If they're old enough, they've received their rabies vaccine. If they're a dog, they've gotten their distemperadenoparvo vaccines, their Bordetella kennel cough vaccination. We have dewormed them, and if the dog's old enough, we've also heartworm tested them to confirm they're not heartworm positive, and that's all included."

Dr. Jon Austin told Hutch Post earlier this year that his charges to do all that work would be around $300.
