MANHATTAN, Kan. — Hutchinson High School student Nikon Sublett has been elected mayor of one of the eight cities represented at the 2026 American Legion Boys State of Kansas.

Sublett, a senior-to-be from Hutchinson, was elected mayor of the City of Klassen in Eisenhower County. He and seven other newly elected mayors were sworn in Monday night by Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab.

Schwab attended Kansas Boys State in 1989 as a delegate from Great Bend High School.

The other students elected mayor were Alden Deady of Overland Park, Joey Hurla of Russell, Beau Kalkman of Olathe, Talon Pyle of Ellis, Travis Ross of Rush Center, Nico Schober of Wichita and Noah Washington of Topeka.

Students from across Kansas are participating in this year’s Boys State session, which began Sunday and runs through Saturday at Kansas State University in Manhattan.

The program is holding its 34th consecutive session at K-State and its 88th session overall.

Kansas Boys State is open to students who have completed their sophomore or junior years of high school. The program is designed to provide an interactive experience in leadership, teamwork and civic responsibility.

Delegates participate in a simulation of state, county and local government, including elections, political parties and opportunities to serve in leadership roles.
