Frances J. Martin, 97, of Houston, TX, died February 20, 2024, at Apex Oaks at Cypress Assisted Living, Houston, TX. She was born April 10, 1926, in Hutchinson, KS, to Charles Lee and Gertrude T. (Bressler) Detter.
Frances was a 1944 graduate of Hutchinson High School. She attended Hutchinson Community College and graduated from the University of Kansas in 1948. Frances was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She worked as a journalist for the Hutchinson News Herald and a librarian for the Palm Beach County School District in Florida. She was a bookkeeper for the Naturalizer Shoe Store in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, which her husband owned.
Frances was a member of Jersey Village Baptist Church, Houston, TX. She was a 77 year member of P.E.O. and would become a member of a P.E.O. chapter wherever she lived.
On March 23, 1952, she married George D. Martin, Jr., at the First Presbyterian Church, Hutchinson, KS. They shared over 61 years of marriage, prior to his death on April 14, 2013.
Frances is survived by: children, Ruth (Mack) Preece-Duncan of Houston, TX, Phillip (Maria) Martin of Jupiter, FL; grandchildren, Nicole (Josh) Carroll of Cypress, TX, Brandon (Jessica) Preece of Houston, TX, Erik (Kristin) Martin of Atlanta, GA, Jenelle (Geoff) McNeill of Jupiter, FL; great-grandchildren, Aiden, Jack, and Emily Carroll of Cypress, TX, Ava and Caiden McNeill of Jupiter, FL, Daniel and Noah Preece of Houston, TX.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband; and four brothers.
Graveside service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 26, 2024, at Memorial Park Cemetery, 5905 W. 4th Ave, Hutchinson, KS. Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, at Elliott Mortuary.
