RILEY COUNTY — A family of four was displaced after an apartment fire in Manhattan.
Just before 11a.m. Thursday, the Manhattan Fire Department responded to a fire at Woodway Apartments, 2421 Woodway Drive, according to a media release from the Manhattan Fire Department.
Upon arrival, firefighters observed smoke coming from the second floor of the three-story apartment building. Crews located and quickly extinguished the fire, searched the apartment, and remained on scene to ventilate smoke from the structure.
A total of 19 firefighters responded on six apparatus. The fire was declared under control at 11:05 a.m .No injuries to people or pets were reported. The apartment residents were not home at the time of the fire.
Maintenance personnel saw the smoke and immediately called 911.“ Apartment maintenance staff acted quickly by calling 911 as soon as they saw the smoke,” said Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Almes. “Their action helped firefighters reach the scene quickly and contain the fire before it spread to other units.
We are grateful for their awareness and action.”A Manhattan Fire Department investigator determined the fire was accidental and originated on a stovetop.Damage to apartment contents is estimated at $10,000, and damage to the structure is estimated at $125,000.
The unit was declared uninhabitable and the apartment’s four occupants, two adults and two children, were displaced. The American Red Cross responded to offer housing and assistance to the residents.
