HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The cooler weather is easing some of the algae issues that have all but shut down several area lakes during the summer.
In the latest advisories issued by KDHE, only Lake Afton near Goddard is under an algae warning, meaning all contact with the water should be avoided.
Harvey County East Lake and Cheney Reservoir remain under algae watches for possible outbreaks. Marion Reservoir, which has been under some type of advisory since the summer began, has been taken off the advisory list altogether.
If you observe a scum or paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments in the water, or if the water is an opaque green, avoid contact and keep pets away.
Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.
