HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Talk20 Hutch is a gathering of people and ideas that is coming up Friday, Jan. 27 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Hutchinson Public Library.

"Talk20 is based on a Japanese format called PechaKucha, which is 20 slides and 20 seconds per slide," said organizer Kari Mailloux. "When I moved back to Hutchinson in 2013, I wanted to see if it would be something the community would respond to and if it would help bring people together. I reached out to a new person that I'd never met, Patsy Terrell, in the summer of 2013 and this is one of the ideas we floated around. We brought it to the Hutchinson Public Library and said, will you experiment with us? They said yes. In January 2014, we launched the first one and we had a standing room only crowd in that room at the library, more than 150 people there, to kind of witness the first."

The idea is that each presenter shares a story or an expertise or an interest through the combination of quick images and words to create a cohesive narrative of a chosen topic in 6 minutes 40 seconds.

"They send in their 20 slides," Mailloux said. "We put them in the master PowerPoint. We have no idea what they are going to say until that night."

The ten presenters are below, in no particular order:

Presenting at Talk20 Hutch 17th Edition will be Amanda Miller on "The Joys of Being Cheesy."

Living on a dairy farm has given Amanda a unique opportunity to experiment with making homemade cheeses. Though it's not a necessary skill, she loves how it grounds her in the slow-down process of making her own food and finding joy in simple things. Home cheesemaking is a study in contrasts, as it is easy and complex, traditional and innovative, local and global--and also, a neat party trick with delicious results.

Also presenting will be Betsy McKinney on "Training Tomorrow's Leaders Today."

Fairfield USD 310 is a school district located in Western Reno County that serves 285 students from six small towns and the rural areas in between. Under Betsy's leadership as superintendent, the district strives to help develop their students as the leaders of tomorrow. Part of leadership involves service and citizenship--those are just some of the qualities they try to instill.

Also presenting will be Rae C. Luginsland on "Tractors Riding Back into History."

Rae will share adventures of the Great Plains Tractor Club as experienced by their members as they ride around the state attending Tractor Shows, Competitive Tractor Pulls, Parades, Fairs and all small town celebrations.

Also presenting will be Wesley Vaughn on "On & Off the Beat: Policing Where I Live."

Policing where he lives can be a lesson in navigation of community relationships. On the beat, Wesley is a police officer tasked with keeping the community safe; off the beat he is a community member with hopes, dreams, and aspirations like anyone else.

Also presenting will be Amanda Wilke on "From Calm to Chaos: Home Organizing."

Are you overwhelmed by clutter in your home? Amanda is a certified organizational specialist who will give you practical tips on how to transform your home and thus reduce your stress. From bedrooms to basements, learn how to curate your possessions and improve your life!

Also presenting will be Pippin Williamson on "Community Goes Viral and Saves a Business."

In September 2022, Sandhills Brewing faced a crisis due to outdated regulations. After a blunt, direct plea for help that went viral, the local community and people from far and wide came out in force to voice their support for the brewery's survival with their wallets and appetites.

Also presenting will be Esmeralda Tovar-Mora on "Pope: Justice, Freedom, Peace."

This Talk20 is in honor of Darrell Pope, a hero in our community. He resonates justice, freedom, and peace. Darrell Pope’s tenacity for a better tomorrow and love for his community is evident through his actions and efforts for civil rights and local policy. This will be his story.

Also presenting will be Dimitriy Vakulenko on "The Spirit of Ukraine."

Also presenting will be Allen STEM Magnet KidWind on "KidWind."

Allen STEM Magnet embarked on a new project called the KidWind Challenge. What started as, "sure we will give it a try," turned into unimaginable opportunities for students. Tara Urban, one of this year's coaches, will walk you through their school’s first year participating in the KidWind Challenge.

Also presenting will be Steve Becker and Beth White on their podcast, "Cleared".

The podcast examines cases of wrongful convictions, and sheds light on the imperfections in our legal system and how those imperfections lead to the imprisonment of innocent people.

You can follow Talk20 on social media to check out more details about the event and find a link to the Facebook Live if you can't attend in person at the library.
