NEWTON, Kan. — The Newton City Commission held a joint work session with the USD 373 Board of Education and Newton Recreation Commission to hear a proposal from a group of engaged citizens hoping to make improvements at Themian Park.
The Railer Foundation, made up of several youth sports clubs, has proposed to add ballfields, a soccer field, basketball courts, pickleball courts, a public restroom, and a picnic shelter at Themian, paid for primarily by private donations.
The three bodies gave the go-ahead to begin fundraising and put together a committee to help work through details such as bidding, parking concerns, lighting, and ongoing maintenance.
