Officials looking into illegal dumping and burning near Burrton

BURRTON, Kan. —Local, state and federal officials are investigating an illegal dumping and burning site east of Burrton.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to the 1900 block of South Sand Hill Road on Thursday morning on the report of a man injured by an outdoor fire. The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated and released for his injuries.

Emergency responders discovered an illegal dump site at the location, where the man is alleged to have been burning off materials for disposal.

A preliminary investigation identified the materials as a combination of substances used in paints, paint thinners and nail polish removers.

At this time, there are no known community impacts.

The quantity of materials at the site has not been determined. The incident remains under investigation. The Office of the State Fire Marshal, Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Environmental Protection Agency will determine any additional actions related to the site.

Burrton Fire/EMS, Burrton Police Department, Newton Fire/EMS, Sedgwick County Fire Department, Harvey County Sheriff’s Office and Harvey County Emergency Management also assisted in the response.
