
Jack Emmett Hughes, 78, died April 5, 2025, at his home, with his three children by his side, after a very brief illness. He was born November 28, 1946, in Hutchinson, to Emmett W. and Sarah Ann (Gibson) Hughes.
Jack graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1964, received his associate’s degree from Hutchinson Community Junior College, and attended Kansas State University. He was known throughout the Hutchinson community as a business owner and entrepreneur of restaurants and night clubs. Some of Jack’s most notable establishments were The Doctor Zinn, formerly located at 23rd and Main, Howard’s Claim, Chapter One, College Union, Page Two, and Frankiesinatra’s. In addition, he was a DJ at The Red Lion. Jack had many interests, and worked some as a carpenter and builder. Jack enjoyed music, singing and dogs, especially Bulldogs.
Jack is survived by: his children, Jaye Hughes (Connie) of Hutchinson, Julia Hughes of Kansas, and Jennifer Hughes of Kansas City, MO; brother-in-law, Ted Crank of TN; two nephews; goddaughter, Lauren Stacey Walker (Swender); godsons, Remy Ethan Kulick-Hart and Roman Isaiah Kulick-Hart.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Michael Hughes (Lisa); and sisters, Jill Crank and Barbara Clendening.
Memorial service will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12, 2025, at Elliott Chapel, with Pastor Tim Kraft officiating. Friends may sign his book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday at Elliott Mortuary. Private inurnment will take place at a later date in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson.
