DOUGLAS COUNTY — With deep sadness, the Lawrence Kansas Police Department announces the off-duty death of Officer Zachary Garcia-Kerns.
Officer Garcia-Kerns honorably served the Lawrence community since October of 2021, first at the KU Police Department, then with Lawrence Kansas Police Department since November of 2023. Officer Garcia-Kerns died on April 3, 2026. He was 28 years old.
As a final act of service, Officer Garcia-Kerns' gift of life donation will save the lives of as many as 75 others.
We are focused on supporting Officer Garcia-Kerns' family and everyone in the department right now. The family is requesting no other details be released. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is working the death investigation, where no foul play is suspected.
