
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Fire Crews responded to 1428 E. 5th around 10:18 a.m. for a residential fire.
First-arriving units reported smoke showing from the backside of a small 1 ½-story residence. Crews found an exterior fire. Fire crews located two residents inside and assisted with self-evacuation.
The residence suffered moderate damage to the rear of the structure, minor damage was found on the interior of the home. The occupants are being assisted by the Red Cross.
Investigation found improper discard of smoking materials was the cause of the fire.
Crews had to battle the extremely cold conditions and a water main break along East 5th, closing off that portion of the street.
