The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce has named Inland Ocean Vineyards as its June Small Business of the Month, recognizing the winery’s growth, commitment to quality and contributions to the local community.
Owned by Dr. Jim Lairmore, Inland Ocean Vineyards began nearly four decades ago as a backyard hobby with a handful of grapevines. Today, the operation includes more than 1,200 vines across two acres and produces approximately 3,500 bottles of wine each year.
What distinguishes Inland Ocean Vineyards is its commitment to producing wine exclusively from grapes grown on its Reno County property. Unlike many wineries that rely on imported grapes, frozen juice or bulk wine, every step of the process — from growing the grapes to bottling the finished product — takes place locally.

Lairmore said the winery’s success grew from what he jokingly describes as “a series of bad decisions,” but those decisions have helped create a unique agricultural business in Reno County.
While best known professionally as a surgeon, Lairmore has applied the same precision and attention to detail to winemaking. From selecting yeast strains to monitoring fermentation and aging, the winery emphasizes consistency and quality throughout the production process.
The business continues to expand. Inland Ocean wines are available at several local retailers, including Sandhills Brewing, DJ Liquor and Temaat’s. Construction is also underway on a new event center that will accommodate up to 150 guests. Chamber officials said the venue is expected to create opportunities for local caterers, florists, food trucks, event staff and other small businesses.
In addition to its business achievements, Inland Ocean Vineyards has earned recognition for its community involvement. Lairmore and his family support numerous local organizations, events and partnerships throughout Reno County.
Chamber officials said the winery exemplifies the entrepreneurial spirit and community-minded values that the Small Business of the Month award is intended to recognize.
The Chamber encouraged the community to join in congratulating Dr. Jim Lairmore, his daughter Michelle and the entire Inland Ocean Vineyards team on receiving the June honor.
