HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas State Fair Board gave the approval to allow the Hutchinson Fire Department to move ahead with plans for a new fire station on the fairgrounds during their meeting on Tuesday.
“This has been an ongoing project since it was approved in 2015 from the city council,” Fire Chief Steve Beer said. “So we finally get to address the concerns there, and the needs as the community changes.”
Originally the fire department wanted to expand their current station at 20th and Main and had asked the fair for some land adjacent to the building. But, those plans changed and now the new station will be located near the 23rd Avenue gate just north of the North Sunflower Building. The station will have direct access to Main Street. The station is usually one of the busiest in the city and makes most if not all calls to the fairgrounds.
“It will be a seven person station, it will also have a few of the brush trucks located there for deployment. It will probably be one of the largest stations we have in the city,” Beer said. “This station is our busiest station in the city with the most call volume.”
The project is budgeted for 2022 with a cost of around $4.5 million. Beer says they hope to get the project moving before the end of the year.
