
Ronald (Ron) L. Smith, 89, died March 15, 2025, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born January 23, 1936, in Hutchinson, to Reed Q. and Ida Maye (Coberly) Smith.
Ron attended Hutchinson High School. On July 16, 1954, he followed his dream and joined the Hutchinson Fire Department. After 42 years of dedicated service to his community, he retired as Battalion Chief on July 16, 1996. Even after retirement, Ron remained deeply connected to his firefighting family, always valuing the friendships built over his decades of service.
In retirement, Ron enjoyed wood carving, KU/KSU sports, and KC Chiefs football. He loved country music, especially live performances like Willie Nelson and the Eagles. Above all, his most precious moments were spent with family and friends.
Ron and Cathy celebrated 40 years of marriage this year. He is survived by his wife Cathy and his children, Pam Heimerman, Ron (Sue) Smith, and Mike (Lisa) Smith; grandchildren, Cari (Wylie) Baker, Cassie Smith, Lilly Smith, and Ava Smith; great-grandchildren, Gauge (Kensley) Harper, Colton Harper, and Maci Harper; great-great-grandchildren, Alaina and Nolan Harper; and sister Sherry (Jess) Brooks.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Janet Lynn; grandson, Greg Stephenson; brothers, Roy, Wally, and Carol Smith; great-grandson, Wyatt Harper; and son-in-law, Dan Heimerman.
Cremation has taken place. The family will greet friends at Elliott Mortuary from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2025, followed immediately by a Rosary at 7 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 20, 2025, at Church of the Holy Cross, 2631 Independence Road, Hutchinson, presided by Father Matt Marney. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson, with Hutchinson Fire Department Honors.
Friends may sign Ron’s memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary or at the service.
