Peter Canisius Leiker, born October 27, 1928, on a farm west of Liebenthal, Kansas, and passed away peacefully on July 28, 2024. A beloved son of Alexander and Christina (Enslinger) Leiker, Peter was one of ten children and is remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family and community.
A proud graduate of Schoenchen Rural High School (1947), Peter answered the call to serve his country in 1951, completing Basic Training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and Airborne Jump School at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was honorably discharged in 1953 and held in high regard as a member of the American Legion.
Peter's professional life was distinguished by his career with the National Cooperative Refinery, where he retired as an Area Supervisor. His contributions to the workforce were recognized by his honorary membership in the Teamsters Union and the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union.
Married to Roberta McDaniel on August 1, 1953, Peter cherished his loving partnership with her and took immense pride in their three children. He was also deeply devoted to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, celebrating their achievements and milestones with great joy.
Peter found great pleasure in fishing, boating, and camping, with a special fondness for their Alaskan adventure. His woodworking skills were evident in the roll top desk he crafted and many gifts for family. His faith was a cornerstone of his life; he was a devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, McPherson, where he was a Charter Member of the Knights of Columbus Council #5222, helping to establish the council in 1962.
Preceded in death by his wife Roberta, his parents, and several siblings. Peter is survived by his children, David (Mary) Leiker, Donna (Greg) Spachek, and Diane Scroggins; eight grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in McPherson on Friday, August 2, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The Rosary will be recited at 9:00 am on Saturday, August 3, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am. Burial will follow at McPherson Cemetery.
