NEWTON, Kan. — The Newton City Commission, USD 373 Board of Education, and Newton Recreation Commission will hold a joint public work session at 5 p.m. May 14 at the Meridian Center to hear about a proposal for improvements to Themian Park.

A citizen group is fundraising for improvements like ballfields, a soccer field, basketball courts, pickleball courts, a public restroom, and a picnic shelter. They will present their proposal to the three bodies, each of which has an interest in Themian Park. The City of Newton owns the park, USD 373 leases it for school use, and the Rec Commission uses it for some youth sports and has been asked to assist with maintenance.

The meeting is open to the public, and neighborhood residents have been invited to attend and provide comment.
