New fire station bids go before council Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council will go over bids for the new fire station that will be relocated on the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

The council will be asked to approve the low bid from Wiens Construction at a cost of $4,854,000. The bid is above what was placed in the CIP fund for 2022. Plans are to have the facility finished by the end of the year.

The new station will be located at the 23rd and Main gate. Originally, the fire department wanted to expand the current station at 20th and Main and had asked the fair for some land adjacent to the building. But those plans changed and now the new station will be located near the 23rd Avenue gate just north of the North Sunflower Building. The station will have direct access to Main Street. The station is usually one of the busiest in the city and makes most, if not all, calls to the fairgrounds.

The city has already entered into a 99 year lease agreement for the new fire station at $1 per year.

The matter comes up for action during Tuesday’s agenda session starting at 9 a.m. at the Hutchinson city offices.
