HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Quitting smoking isn’t easy. It takes time and a plan. You don’t have to stop smoking in one day. Start with day one. Let the Great American Smokeout event on Nov. 16 be the day to start a journey toward a smoke-free life.
2023 is the third year for the Resist program at Reno Valley Middle School in Nickerson-South Hutchinson USD 309. The purpose of the Resist program is to educate students about the dangers of tobacco and combat tobacco use in the schools. The students in the program spend time researching tobacco use and sharing their findings with students at Reno Valley, SHE, and NES, with the ultimate goal of decreasing tobacco use in the district.
As part of the event, Reno Valley Middle School is showing a movie about Dr. Victor DeNoble Tuesday night, Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria. The movie, Addiction Incorporated, shares his story of going from a scientist for the tobacco industry, to exposing exactly what Big Tobacco knew about its product. If you can't attend at the school, contact the school and they will send you the link.
About 34 million American adults still smoke cigarettes, and smoking remains the single largest preventable cause of death and illness in the world. Smoking causes an estimated 480,000 deaths every year, or about 1 in 5 deaths.
