Nelson formally charged in high speed chase

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Formal charges have been brought against a Hutchinson man who led authorities on a high speed chase Sept. 14th.

Clancy Nelson is charged with two counts of kidnapping, distribution of meth, distribution and possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of meth, felony flee and elude, flee and elude with reckless driving and possession of drug paraphernalia. He’s still held on a bond of $221,000.

Nelson fled from law enforcement as they tried to make a vehicle stop in the city. The chase went south on Avenue A to U.S. 50 and then east at speeds of up to 90 miles per hour. Deputies were able to force Nelson off the road near Burrton. 

One of two passengers in the vehicle, Heather Smith, was also arrested for drug distribution and other warrants. The second passenger, Spencer Mullen, was released from the scene.

According to the SO the two passengers wanted out of the vehicle during the chase but Nelson refused thus the kidnapping charges.
