Wheat crop still looks good

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It is becoming apparent that the cold snap may not have hurt the Kansas wheat crop as much as feared. According to numbers released by the Kansas Ag Statistics Service, 55% of the wheat crop is in good to excellent condition and only 15% is in poor to very poor condition — 30% of the crop is listed in fair condition.

The crop continues to be hampered by cool, wet weather and things will need to start drying out soon so the crop can fully mature and fight off disease that is still hurting the crop.

In south-central Kansas, more than 95% of the wheat is headed and 84% of the wheat is headed statewide. That's ahead of last year and just behind the 85% average for the state. If all goes well, harvest could begin in about a month.
