Reno County EMS
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County EMS shared the following tips on social media for use during the extreme cold weather.
Minimize travel and stay indoors during the worst part of the extreme cold.
Keep a winter survival kit in your vehicle if you must travel.
Check tire pressure, antifreeze levels, heater/defroster, etc.
Learn how to shut off water valves for potential pipe bursts.
Check on the elderly.
Bring pets inside.
If outside, wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing, and a hat. The air between layers serves as insulation. Remember that strenuous activity leads to sweat which, without proper clothing, can accelerate hypothermia. Mittens, snug at the wrist, are better than gloves.
From the National Weather Service:
Hypothermia is an unusually low body temperature. Symptoms include shivering, exhaustion, fumbling hands, memory loss, confusion, slurred speech, or drowsiness. If you suspect someone has hypothermia, seek medical attention immediately.
