Marlene Shirley Neufeld, 86, died October 8, 2024, at Hester Care Center, Hutchinson. She was born at Grace Hospital in Hutchinson, to Jacob and Mary (Goertzen) Base.

Marlene was raised on a small farm three and a half miles west of Burrton. She attended Buhler High School, where she was the basketball queen. Marlene was the catcher of her softball team, and a fierce ping pong player. Marlene graduated high school in 1955.

She worked for Jefferson Standard Life Insurance, Wells Aircraft, Buhler Unified School District, Gregory, Inc., Cargill Egg, and other businesses. Marlene loved cooking, especially if it was a new recipe and going for walks. She was always a very classy lady, and made sure everything was perfect from her clothes, to her hair, to her make-up and her jewelry.

On June 1, 1957, she married her high school sweetheart, Vernon Dean Neufeld, in Burrton. They shared over 65 years of marriage, prior to his death on September 3, 2022.

Marlene is survived by: her children, Steve (Linda) Neufeld and Susan Mayfield; grandchildren, Jessica (Malcolm) White and Joshua (Kaitlyn) Neufeld; great-grandchildren, Matix and Emersyn White; and a sister, Valeta Franz.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband; sister, Marita; and brother, Duane.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at Buhler Municipal East Cemetery, 14842 E. 82nd, Buhler. Friends may sign her memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.  

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Hospice and HomeCare of Reno County, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main., Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Marlene loved her neck scarves, so the family would like everyone attending her service to wear a neck scarf if you have one, if you do not, one can be provided to you.
