HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Police Department is partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration for the 30th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day this Saturday, offering residents a safe and anonymous way to dispose of unused or expired medications.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 25 at Dillon’s Marketplace, 3200 Plaza East Drive.

Officials say the initiative is designed to prevent prescription drug misuse and abuse by removing unneeded medications from homes. The event is free and open to the public, with no questions asked.

Since its launch 16 years ago, Take Back Day events have collected more than 20.4 million pounds — or more than 10,200 tons — of medications nationwide.

Residents can drop off tablets, capsules, patches and other solid forms of prescription drugs. However, collection sites will not accept syringes, sharps or illicit drugs. Liquid medications, such as cough syrup, are accepted only if they remain sealed in their original containers with tightly secured caps to prevent leaks.

The Drug Enforcement Administration hosts Take Back Day events at more than 4,200 locations across the country in partnership with local law enforcement agencies.
