JACKSON COUNTY, MO — In July,  the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office received information regarding the suspected introduction of contraband, including illegal narcotics, into the Jackson County Detention Center, according to Sheriff Daryl Forte'.

Upon learning of these allegations, Sheriff Forté immediately authorized an investigation and requested assistance of the Jackson County Drug Task Force (JCDTF), an outside law enforcement agency, to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation.

On October 16, 2026, a corrections officer, with two years of service at the Jackson County Detention  Center, was taken into custody upon arriving for his scheduled shift.

On Wednesday a Jackson County Judge unsealed the case, and on Thursday the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office announced the charges against the officer, identified as 31-year-old Jeremy Mfundu of Raytown, Missouri, with one count of the Delivery of a Prohibited Article into Jail and one count of Conspiracy to Commit the Delivery of a Controlled Substance.

Following his arrest, Mfundu was immediately placed on unpaid leave, pending further administrative  action.

“As Sheriff of Jackson County, Missouri, I want to emphasize that this incident does not diminish the  dedication and professionalism of the many corrections professionals who work tirelessly to maintain a  safe and secure environment for inmates, staff, and the public at the detention center,” said Sheriff Forté.

“The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is committed to maintaining public trust, upholding the law, and ensuring accountability at every level of our organization. Credible allegations of misconduct will be

taken seriously, investigated thoroughly, and addressed appropriately. Sheriff Forté added, “No employee is above the law. When evidence establishes unlawful conduct, those responsible will be held accountable and may face criminal prosecution and termination of employment, as appropriate”.
