NICKERSON, Kan. — The Nickerson City Council will go over a proposed ordinance it hopes will deal with undeveloped or rundown lots in the city when it meets Monday.
The city is dealing with a number of rundown or vacant buildings and wants to be able to get property owners to make positive changes or come up with a way to have the property marketed so it can be sold or renovated. The city says that abandoned and vacant buildings result in increased expenditures for police, fire, and code services inspections and calls.
Maintenance of the public health, safety, and welfare thus requires the city to maintain an accurate registration of all abandoned and vacant buildings. The empty structures also blunt appreciation of property values, endanger public health and safety, attract criminal activity and create fire hazards. It is the responsibility of property owners to prevent buildings from becoming a burden to the neighborhood and community and a threat to the public health, safety and welfare.
Also Monday, the council will seek approval of bids for a storm water project. The recommended bid from Gibby’s Sewer and Drain totals $39,008. Action will be taken on a bid from Alexander Pump and Services to rebuild a water well pump at a cost of $16,714.
Monday’s meeting of the Nickerson City Council begins at 7 p.m. at the Nickerson city offices.
