HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Dillon Nature Center continues to look over its master plan. The Peer consult team visited the center April 14-16 to gather input from both staff and the public. The study is being done because of a shift in the age of the visitors to the center and how they use the facilities.
The team of Nature Center Professionals included three nature center directors who currently run centers in New Mexico, Tennessee and Utah, and one retired director from Missouri.
The group also toured the grounds and facilities and talked about the various programs offered by the nature center. The team also spent several hours meeting with stakeholders, including: Staff from Hutch Rec, Dillon Nature Center, and City Parks & Facilities; DNC Foundation members; as well as volunteers, partners and donors.
The group presented the strengths and some things that the center could improve upon. The biggest strength for the nature center is that it is loved by the community and has a very strong foundation of supporters. Some of the drawbacks presented by the group were some of the signage at the facility and coming up with a way to better inform the public about its mission and service to the area.
A written report is expected in the next week or two. It will be made available to the public.
