Algae still a problem at Cheney

Posted Oct 16, 2021 9:53 AM

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Fishermen who use Cheney reservoir still need to use caution around the water.

The reservoir is still under a blue-green algae watch, according to the latest advisories issued by KDHE. Only Lake Afton near Goddard is under an algae warning, meaning all contact with the water should be avoided.

Harvey County East Lake is also under an algae watch for possible outbreaks.

If you observe a scum or paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments in the water, or if the water is an opaque green, avoid contact and keep pets away.

Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.
