Growing scrutiny of the meatpacking industry and a sharp increase in Brazilian beef imports are fueling renewed debate over competition in the U.S. cattle market and concerns about long-term food security.

According to Progressive Farmer, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed the Trump administration is investigating potential anti-competitive practices within the meatpacking sector as imported beef volumes continue to rise.

New USDA trade data shows Brazilian beef exports to the United States totaled $795 million during the first quarter of 2026, a 21 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

Overall U.S. beef imports climbed 28 percent during that timeframe, while domestic beef exports declined, increasing pressure on American cattle producers already dealing with narrow profit margins and higher production costs.

Brazil’s Association of Meat Exporting Industries has argued that expanded access to the U.S. market would benefit both countries. The group said elevated U.S. beef prices, combined with Brazil’s production capacity, could help meet consumer demand in the United States.

Brazilian exporters are also seeking greater access to the U.S. market as China approaches its annual import quota for Brazilian beef.

The increase in imported supply comes as many U.S. cattle producers continue to face concerns over market concentration among major meatpackers and growing global competition. Industry analysts warn that additional imported beef could place further downward pressure on domestic cattle prices at a time when ranchers are already struggling with tight operating margins.
