
Shirley Ann Higgins, 92, passed away on July 27, 2026, at Locust Grove Village in LaCrosse, Kansas. She was born on March 7, 1934, in McCracken, Kansas the daughter of Robert and Grace (Elias) Lovitt.
On July 28, 1956, she married Victor Higgins in McCracken, Kansas. He passed away on October 26, 2006.
Shirley graduated with the Class of 1952 from McCracken High School and attended Hutchinson Community College for one year. After returning to McCracken, she began working at the Citizens State Bank as a bank teller for more than 25 years. Following the closing of the bank in 1986, Shirley worked for the National Motor Club and was recognized for outstanding sales during her tenure. For many years she co-wrote the McCracken News for the Rush County News. She served on the board for the McCracken Library, the McCracken Historical Museum and the McCracken Alumni Association. She volunteered at Second Chance Thrift Store in LaCrosse and was always willing to help with community events.
Survivors include 2 sons, Jerry (Jodi) Higgins of Hutchinson, Chuck Higgins of McCracken; 2 daughters, Tammy (John) Horesky of Ellis, Kayla (Dominic) Weskamp of Castle Rock, CO; grandchildren, Kyra (Bryant) Reese, Cameron (Courtney) Horesky, Zach Higgins, Lindsey (Grady) Brooks, Tanner (Alyssa) Higgins, Nicole (Lucas) Gatten, Jenna (Ben) Garcia; great-grandchildren, Elliott and Emmett Horesky; Maddison and Brooks Reese, Margaret and William Higgins, Parker Garcia; step-grandchildren, Madison Weskamp, Garrett Weskamp, Jackson Weskamp; sister in-law Twila Higgins and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, her brother Bill Lovitt and wife Sharon.
A vigil service and Rosary will be on Tuesday, August 4, at St. Mary’s Church in McCracken at 7:00 p.m. Family members will greet visitors prior to the vigil from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the church. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s
Church, McCracken, Kansas. Burial in the McCracken Cemetery. Friends may call at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City, Kansas, on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Please dress casually.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the St. Mary’s Heritage Association, McCracken Historical Museum, McCracken Alumni Association, or McCracken Library.
