Newton woman died over weekend; charges updated

NEWTON, Kan. — The City of Newton updated on Tuesday that the charge in last week's shooting case has been updated to first-degree murder after the victim, Peggy Sue Altum, 74, passed away over the weekend. The suspect, Edward Altum, 70, remains in Harvey County Jail.

NEWTON, Kan. — A 74-year-old Newton woman was shot overnight, and her husband was arrested on an attempted murder charge.

At about 1:45 a.m. Friday, Newton Police responded to a report of a shooting in the 2000 block of Terrace Drive. A man at the house reported his wife had been shot and refused to answer any further questions.

The victim was taken by ambulance to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita with life-threatening injuries.

The man, Edward Altum, 70, was arrested and booked into Harvey County Jail. A gun was recovered by police at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.
