LeRoy Gene Schmidt, 85, of McPherson, KS, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, surrounded by family at the McPherson Hospital.
He was born April 26, 1939, in Buhler, KS, the son of Otto P. and Linda E. (Martens) Schmidt. He graduated from Buhler High School in 1957. He continued his education at Bethel College in North Newton and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education in 1961.
On December 19, 1958, LeRoy was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Vicki Lou Hayes, at the Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church, Inman, KS. This union was blessed with three children, Brenda, Brad, and Jan.
LeRoy was a retired investment advisor for Invest Financial within Home State Bank where he was also a Senior Vice President. Following retirement, he volunteered and served on the board for the ReUse It Center. He was also a member of Countryside Covenant Church.
Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Vicki; three children, Brenda (Dan) Kliewer of McPherson, KS, Brad (Cathy) Schmidt of McPherson, KS, and Jan (Stan) Ruff of El Dorado, KS; a twin brother, Leon (Janet) Schmidt of North Newton, KS; a sister, Velda (John) Braun of Seattle, WA; brother-in-law, Gordon Funk of Wichita, KS; seven grandchildren, Tim (Lacey) Kliewer, Emily (Tyler) Greer, Ashley Schmidt, Paige Schmidt, Alyssa (Dylan) Woodbridge, Zachary Ruff, and Mikala (Dacota) Motter; 16 great-grandchildren; and many extended relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Delores Funk.
A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at Countryside Covenant Church with Rev. Jon Black officiating. A private graveside service will be held at the McPherson Cemetery.
