
Gary was born to Darwin and Lois Buck on September 28th, 1950 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He moved to Wichita when he was 9, graduating from East High in 1968.
He attended Wichita State University, where he earned a master’s degree in anthropology and bachelor’s degree in psychology. He was also a founding father of the Beta Iota chapter of the Alpha Kappa Lambda fraternity. He later moved to northern Idaho for 7 years where he was employed as an archaeologist until he sought a career change as a teacher. He attended the University of Idaho, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in science and education, majoring in history.
Gary started his teaching career in 1990 at Buhler High School before coming to Wichita Public Schools in 1992, where he taught at Hadley, Mayberry, East and Northeast Magnet before retiring in 2011. He taught social studies and was a special education facilitator.
As a substitute, he taught at Jardine, Mayberry Middle School, Northeast Magnet, and Southeast High.
Gary enjoyed archaeology, cars, rock concerts, college sports, gardening, camping, hunting, fishing, and spending quality time with his friends and family. He encouraged people to be who they are, and inspired countless students.
Survived by his wife Annette Buck, daughter Heidi Buck, sons Alex Buck and Cody Buck (Christine), grandson Dylan Buck, granddaughter Isabella Smickenbecker and nephew Kevin Stowe, many other family and friends.
