Neva Louise Chastain, 97, passed away on January 6, 2025, at Riverview Estates in Marquette, KS. Neva was born July 6, 1927, at home outside of Greensburg, KS, the daughter of Ellis Lyndon and Nettie Irene (Shuck) Peck. She was the 3 rd of 6 children, being born just minutes before her twin sister, Nina. She grew up on a farm east of Greensburg, KS.
When Neva was 18, she moved to Dodge City to work for the telephone company. It was on her travels by bus to visit home, where she met Frank Chastain. Frank, along with his twin brother, John, were ticket agents for Continental Trailways Bus Co. where Neva would catch the bus home. Frank and Neva married on January 1, 1951, at her parents’ home in Greensburg. They lived in Dodge City before moving to Hutchinson.
Neva was a mother, housewife and friend to many and willing to go the extra mile for others, with a cheerful heart. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Silver Leaf Chapter. She was also a Girl Scout and Cub Scout Leader. Neva loved to cook, sew, embroidery, make tied quilts for many family and friends.
Neva was a member of the Hutchinson First United Methodist Church before transferring to the Ellsworth Methodist Church when she moved to Ellsworth in 2008. She loved the Lord and made sure that even though Frank had to work every Sunday, she got her children to church each week. She loved her Sunday school classes and the many friends there.
After Frank passed away in 2010, she moved to The Pines Apartments where she made many friends. In May 2024, Neva moved to Riverview Estates in Marquette, KS. She was always so appreciative of everyone, and all that they did for her and all that they meant to her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank; siblings, Ruth Scott, Freda Parcel, Nina Poplinger; Robert Peck, Harold “Merlin” Peck.
Neva is survived by her children, Cheryl (Greg) Reece, Wesley (Brenda) Chastain, and Jan (Brian) Bontrager; sister-in-law, Mona Peck; seven grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; four step-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 17, 2025, at Ellsworth Methodist Church, 322 N. Douglas, Ellsworth, KS. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave, Hutchinson, KS. The burial will take place at 2:30 p.m. Friday, January 17, 2025, in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson, KS. Memorials may be made out to Ellsworth Methodist Church or The Pines Apartments in Ellsworth and sent in care of the funeral chapel.
