Description

The Certified Medication Aide (CMA) works under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. It is the responsibility of the CMA to serve as a role model for CNAs. Personal care and service to residents is required in a manner that promotes flexibility, safety, comfort and places the resident’s overall well-being at the focal point of each task. Duties are performed in accordance with recognized standards, the laws of Kansas and the Mission Statement of The Wesley.

Summary of Responsibilities for Medication Administration

  1. Prepare and administer oral and topical medications as ordered by the physician and as directed by the plan of care.
  2. Document administration of medication on the Medication Record as outlined in policies and procedures. Document outcome of giving PRN medications.
  3. Notify Licensed Nurses of stop orders, stock supply needs, drugs needing to be destroyed and medication errors.
  4. Assist Licensed Nurse with removal of discontinued medications from the medication cart.
  5. Count controlled medications with a Licensed Nurse.

Summary of Responsibilities for Resident Care

  1. Treat all residents with dignity and respect, including those with disruptive behaviors, and ensure resident rights are maintained at all times.
  2. Assist with implementing the resident’s plan of care and assist with interpreting the plan of care to CNAs. Provide residents with opportunities for independence and choice consistent with their care plan. Set the example of quality nursing care for CNAs on the team.
  3. Some shift assignments will require the CMA to be responsible for passing the majority of medications to assigned residents.
  4. Support and foster good relationships with residents, families and visitors.
  5. Answer call lights promptly.
  6. Complete documentation of tasks performed and other required documentation according to The Wesley’s policies and procedures, including vital signs, meal percentages, weights and other documentation as needed.
  7. Assist residents with transfers, promote ambulation and exercise, and transport residents as designated on the resident Plan of Care using gait belts, proper transfer techniques and lifts per facility policies and procedures.
  8. Make beds and change bedding as needed for resident comfort and hygiene.
  9. Meet residents’ nutritional needs by assisting with meal setup as required and provide assistance with eating as needed. Distribute and assist residents with snacks.
  10. Report any behavioral or physical changes in residents’ condition, problems, concerns or grievances involving residents and or families to the Charge Nurse or administrative personnel.
  11. Provide personal care for residents in private and in a calm and friendly manner.
  12. Check residents routinely to ensure all needs are met in a timely manner.
  13. Maintain confidentiality of resident information.
  14. Perform treatments and document them in the nurse’s notes, including observations and progress.
  15. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of changes in the plan of care.

Qualifications

  1. Must have current CMA certification in accordance with the laws of the state of Kansas.
  2. Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
  3. Must be capable of understanding and following oral and written instructions.
  4. High school diploma or GED preferred.
  5. Keep CMA certificate current by attending 10 hours of prescribed continuing education every two years.
  6. Previous experience in geriatric care desired.
  7. Ability to communicate with team members and residents.
  8. Positive attitude toward the ill and the elderly.
  9. Able to cope with the mental and emotional stress related to the position.
