HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Fire Department was kept busy with two structure fires Monday morning.
The first was called in around 5:26 a.m. as crews responded to 526 E. 2nd St. for the first structure fire. Upon arrival, crews found an unoccupied residential structure fully involved in fire. The fire was brought under control at approximately 6:45 a.m. and extensive overhaul measures took place due to a large amount of goods being stored in the unoccupied structure.
A resident of the structure to the east was displaced and is being assisted by the American Red Cross. The fire investigation is still open and ongoing at this time.

Then around 8:38 a.m., firefighters were called to the second fire at 110 Carlton Rd. First-arriving crews found heavy fire showing from the west side of the structure. Most of the fire was on the exterior of the home with some minor extension into the soffit of the roof and a utility room window. This fire was under control at 8:50 a.m.
Investigators on scene determined the fire had started due to discarded ashes from a fireplace into the trash bin. HFD wants to remind everyone to use caution as the temperatures begin to drop when discarding ashes. Discarding ashes into a non-combustible container with a lid is recommended.
