Summer programming is in full swing at Hutchinson Recreation Commission, with a wide range of camps, classes and community events drawing participants of all ages across the city.

Assistant Executive Director Amy Conkling says Hutch Rec's summer camp offerings continue to see strong participation. Programs include the state-licensed Stay and Play childcare camp for students who have completed kindergarten through sixth grade, the long-running Summer Adventure Camp at Dillon Nature Center, and the Play in the Park theater camp offered in partnership with Family Community Theatre.

Conkling noted that Play in the Park gives children an opportunity to explore theater in a low-pressure environment, culminating in outdoor performances for parents at Rice Park each Friday. Additional sessions are scheduled later this summer.

While many residents associate Hutch Rec primarily with youth sports, Conkling said the organization has expanded its focus to include arts, culture and educational programming. She explained that arts programming has actually been part of the agency's mission since its early years and continues today through concerts, cultural events and enrichment classes.

Hutch Rec also offers classes for toddlers, youth, teens and adults. Adult enrichment opportunities include cooking classes, acrylic art and line dancing, which Conkling said is experiencing renewed popularity. Fall and winter registration information is expected later this summer.

The organization recently welcomed a new sports coordinator, Taylor Martin, a former Hutchinson Community College football player and coach who returns to the area after graduating from Fort Hays State University. Conkling said Martin's local ties and enthusiasm make him a valuable addition to the department.

Looking ahead, Hutch Rec is preparing for this week's Third Thursday celebration. The June event will feature a mini car show tied to the Built Different theme, food trucks, live music, a Juneteenth celebration and a performance by Sawyer Fredericks, winner of season eight of "The Voice."

Conkling also highlighted upcoming arts events, including free Salt City Orchestra concerts at Dillon Nature Center on June 19 and at DCI Park during Final Friday on June 26.

Salt City Splash remains open Tuesday through Sunday from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. The water park continues to offer its Toddler and Boomer Time program on Saturday mornings, providing early access for families with young children and adults age 60 and older.
