
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Former Hutchinson Community College head football coach John Matous died on Friday, Nov. 24, at the age of 91.
Matous led the Blue Dragons for 15 seasons from 1964-78 and finished with an overall record of 97-49-6. He currently is No. 3 on the all-time wins list in program history behind Charles Sesher (115-58-14) and Rion Rhoades (99-50). He is No. 2 on the all-time games coached list at 152, 35 behind Sesher for No. 1.
The former coach not only excelled in Blue Dragon history, but also in the Jayhawk Conference. He is No. 6 in all-time coaching victories in conference history. He won Jayhawk Conference titles in 1969 and 1974.
Matous was inducted into the Blue Dragon Hall of Fame in 2000 and the Wichita Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.
According to the HutchCC football media guide, Sesher, Matous and Drew Dallas, are the only coaches in program history to lead the Dragons to undefeated seasons in 1947, 1969, 2020/21, 2023 respectively.
