
Berta Lea “Bert” Newton, 91, died April 25, 2023, at Legend Senior Living, Hutchinson. She was born February 6, 1932, in Hutchinson, to Gilbert L. and Leora L. (Green) Dean.
Bert graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1950 and took classes at Hutchinson Community College, McPherson College, and Emporia State University. She was a librarian at Hutchinson Public Library for 25 years. Bert was a member of Carey Park Golf Association, Reno County Historical Society, Typographical Auxiliary, and First United Methodist Church. She was also an author and wrote, “Ghost Towns of Reno County.”
On July 28, 1951, Bert married Clyde E. Newton, in Hutchinson. He died August 6, 2005.
She is survived by: sons, Mark Newton (Becky) of Middlebury, CT, Randy Newton (Candie) of Hutchinson; daughter-in-law, Vici Newton of Maize; 12 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; brothers, Carl Dean (Janet) of Denver, CO, Gary Dean (Terry) of Wichita; and many extended family members.
Bert was preceded in death by: her parents; sons, Richard and Robert; and sister, Mary Lou Fiorillo.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, April 29, 2023, at Elliott Chapel. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Elliott Mortuary.
