HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The USD 308 Board of Education welcomed two new members on Monday.
Laura Corey and Cheryl Thompson were sworn in as newly elected members of the Hutchinson Public Schools Board of Education.
Since their election in November, Corey and Thompson have been preparing for their roles on the Board of Education by attending training sessions with the Kansas Association of School Boards and meeting with staff and leadership within USD 308.
“It’s humbling to serve a school district that is bursting with innovation and enthusiasm, especially working with such an outstanding school board," Corey said. "From staff competency to the ease in which the board operates, it's evident everywhere - and I am beyond thrilled to be part of it."
“I am very thankful to serve on the USD 308 School Board; the swearing in and sitting on the board for the first time was a true experience and feeling of contribution," Thompson said. "I’d like to thank all the board members and USD 308 staff for their time, guidance, and input which helped me feel comfortable, informed, and prepared for the challenges ahead.”
In addition to the meeting, board members had the opportunity to tour Hutchinson Magnet School at Allen before the official meeting began. Alma Henry, principal at Allen, showcased the STEM focus of the magnet school, including the new Engineering Lab. The Engineering Lab is a student-involved project that will integrate several STEM learning labs such as culinary arts, construction, and computer science.
