Wheat harvest on hold

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The wet weather is keeping the brakes on the 2022 wheat harvest. The persistent rain has kept farmers out of the fields in south-central Kansas and things don’t look to be improving any time soon.

According to Randy Hein with the Sumner County Extension Service, the fields are simply too waterlogged to get in. He added that the high humidity on dry days isn’t helping.

Some elevators in Sumner County say if the weather dries out over the weekend, some farmers may attempt to cut. Officials with Progressive Grain in Wellington say the harvest is already more than a week behind schedule. While sprouting isn’t a problem yet, weeds will become one soon if farmers can’t get into the fields in the coming week.

The state forecast for the wheat harvest is down this year mostly because of the prolonged dry weather last fall and over the winter months.
