HUTCHINSON, Kan. —A Hutchinson USD 308 elementary school will officially go by a different name.  Stem Magnet School at Allen will be referenced to as Allen STEM Magnet School. The name was revealed at a school assembly on Friday afternoon.

Jessica Thomas is in her first year as the principal of the now "Allen STEM Magnet School."

"The teachers came to me at the beginning of the year and they said we've been trying to change the name for awhile," Thomas said. "We think our name is too long and confusing. We'd like to shorten it down. I started looking into what would it take to change the name, talking to the superintendent about it and then we really just got a lot of really good feedback from the kids and the teachers, and the parents and voted on what name they wanted and then I presented it to the board and here we are.

The school board did not approve for an official name change of the school at a board meeting on Monday, Feb. 12.The board did approve for the school to call itself a preferred name on public facing things like apparel, the district website and social media accounts.
